Coyotes

Did You Know?

  • Coyotes live statewide in Colorado and in many areas are quite common.
  • The coyote is the size and shape of a small shepherd dog and weighs 30 to 40 pounds.
  • Coyotes may live up to 20 years, but 10 years is an average.
  • Coyotes are active day or night, but mostly at dawn and dusk.
  • Coyotes eat plants and meat and just about anything organic.

Tips for coexisting with coyotes:

  • Hazing is the best method to discourage coyotes from coming into your yard. However, DO NOT haze a coyote with pups nearby.
  • Do what you can to discourage a coyote’s approach. If a coyote approaches, yell, throw rocks or sticks at it, spray with a hose or bang pots and pans.
  • Never feed coyotes.
  • Never allow your pets to play with a coyote.
  • Always supervise your pet when outside, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • Eliminate attractants from your yard, including pet food, water sources and bird feeders.
  • Work with your neighbors to discourage coyotes in your entire community.

If a Coyote Approaches You:

  • Do not run or turn your back.
  • Be as big and loud as possible.
  • Wave your arms and throw objects.
  • Face the coyote and back away slowly.
  • Never move towards it or corner it where it can’t run away.
  • If attacked, fight back.
