The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. The census will count everyone residing in all 50 states
and includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.
It’s important to get an accurate population count. The data is used to distribute Congressional seats and award more than $300 billion in federal funds to states and communities each year. Census data can guide planning for new
hospitals, schools and other services. The information also is used to determine the biggest need for additional social services,
including the distribution of community development block grants and other grant programs essential to many communities.
Arapahoe County is working together with our cities, towns, school districts and community partners, to help ensure an accurate
2010 Census Count, and ultimately improve upon the 77 percent countywide response rate achieved in the 2000 Census. If the
count for the County isn't accurate, our community may not get all the funds it needs and grants may go to other areas.
The 2010 Census questionnaire will be one of the shortest in history and consists of 10 questions, taking about 10 minutes
to complete. The questionnaire asks only a few simple questions of each person--name, relationship, gender, age and date of
birth, race and whether the respondent owns or rents his or her home.
Strict confidentiality laws protect the confidentiality of respondents and the information they provide. The Census Bureau
does not release or share information that identifies individual respondents or members in their household.
When your household receives the Census form in March 2010, please fill it out completely, return it and help Arapahoe County
to encourage others to do the same.
