LITTLETON, CO --- Arapahoe County is celebrating another successful year and an achievement award received at the American Public Works Association Colorado Chapter conference Oct. 23.
Public Works and Development Director Dave Schmit was named Professional Manager of the Year, Administrative Management, Large Community. Additionally, two Public Works and Development employees were recognized for successfully completing the Rocky Mountain Public Works Institute.
“We are very proud of our Public Works and Development employees and Director Dave Schmit,” said Commissioner Jeff Baker, District 3, who attended the event and is the Board liaison to Public Works. “They work tirelessly to provide services for our citizens and Dave and his management team are dedicated to providing a positive environment for employees.”
Schmit has served the County and its citizens for more than 35 years. He started his career in the Planning and land development review section of what was previously the Department of Highways and Engineering and worked his way through the organization, eventually becoming a registered professional engineer and the Director. He oversees the success of six divisions and 130 employees.
The Rocky Mountain Public Works Institute is a yearlong program that educates and elevates public works employees, helping them achieve their management and leadership goals. Arapahoe County has sent numerous employees through the program, including Caitlyn Cahill, Zoning and Animal Control Manager and Irene Valenzuela, Engineer III, in 2017. Participation in the institute helps to continue the culture of excellence that Schmit has built, while developing the next generation of leaders.
The Arapahoe County Public Works and Development department champions innovation and engagement and is proud to receive these recognitions from the Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association. Currently, PWD is working toward APWA national accreditation, which is expected early 2018. Learn more about Public Works and Development at www.arapahoegov.com/PublicWorks or call 720-874-6500.
