Property Tax Exemption for Senior Citizens and Disabled Veterans
The Senior Citizen and Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemptions currently existing in Colorado statute allows for those who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 in actual value of their primary residence to be exempted. Under the authority provided to the General Assembly by the Colorado Constitution, the exemption amount can be changed or eliminated. In June 2009, Senate Bill 09-276 was adopted. The bill eliminates only the senior exemption benefit and only for tax year 2009. Tax statements mailed in 2010 for qualifying seniors will not reflect the exemption and will be for the full tax amount. The disabled veteran exemption remains in place.

In spite of the one year suspension, the Assessor will continue to process new applications for the exemption program and those who qualify for the first time in 2009 are encouraged to apply.
