It is important to examine people whose death is obvious, but it is extremely important to investigate the cause of death
in homicides or accidents. In the case of a shooting or other fatal assaults, bullets and trace evidence are vital to a case.
If there has been an automobile accident, it is necessary to determine who was driving, and to assess other factors that may
have contributed to the crash, such as alcohol or drugs. Forensic autopsies also may determine if someone died of an inherited
disease, such as diabetes or heart disease, which may identify a risk factor for the next of kin. Informing the family is
an important service the Coroner's Office provides to the next of kin. Documenting all diseases, injuries and abnormalities
also is important to any future criminal or civil litigation.
