Several programs allow for the most effective use of jail space by diverting less serious offenders out of the jail without
compromising public safety.
The Pretrial Release program supervises offenders that are released from the jail, either by posting bail or on their own
recognizance, until their case is disposed. A judge determines whether an offender will be supervised after release and the
terms of their supervision. The program is designed to provide supervision that includes monitoring by phone, office visits,
drug/alcohol screening, and mental health and substance abuse evaluations. The pretrial supervision staff provides reports
to the courts on the defendant’s status on a regular basis.
The Sheriff’s Department administers an Alternative Sentencing Program that includes work release, home detention and the
multiple offender program. These programs allow offenders to keep their jobs while still serving the sentence imposed by the
court.
The Juvenile Diversion Counseling Program was created more than 25 years ago to provide an alternative to court for select
juvenile offenders ages 10 - 18. The program’s goal is to prevent further contact with the police and justice system by providing
a variety of services to meet individual and family needs. Referrals are received through the District Attorney's Office.
