Kinship care is the full time nurturing and protection of children by relatives or people recognized by the biological family as having a family-like relationship. By encouraging families to rely on relatives as a child care resource, children stay in touch with their families and preserve meaningful emotional and cultural ties that are essential to a child's well being. It enables the child to live with people they know and trust, and reduces the stress of being placed with strangers. Kinship care also reinforces a child's sense of identity and self-esteem, and facilitates a child's connections to their siblings.

As with foster and adoptive parents, we provide support services to kinship caregivers and their children. Our caseworker provides assessments of kinship homes, information about working with the Department of Human Services, and on the different options to provide permanency for children. We also provide parenting education, help in coping with feelings, and visitation assistance, throughout the duration of the child’s stay in the home.

For more information about kinship care, please contact us at 303-636-1KID.
