Services are provided through therapeutic intervention to prevent further sexual abuse victimization and perpetration. Therapy
includes individual, family and group for children who have been victims of sexual abuse; this treatment focuses on the cycle
of abuse and alleviation of personal trauma. Group therapy services are provided to parents and offenders of sibling and adult
sexual abuse in order to recognize red flags, develop safety plans, and understand the offender cycle. Groups geared toward
victims focuses on the victim trauma and recovery process. Services are either provided directly by the team or in conjunction
with community programs.
Group therapy services currently provided by SART could include a combination of any of the below.
- Non-offender spouse or significant other therapy groups: The focus of this group is to provide therapy and support to the
non-offending parent who has experienced sexual abuse to their child by a significant other. The group provides therapy and
education regarding sexual abuse behaviors, offender dynamics, and grief and family dynamics specific to sexual abuse. A significant
factor in this group is to help the parent learn safety planning and red flags.
- Art-focused group therapy for ages four to 11: The focus of this group is therapeutic, supportive and educational. The group
focuses on feeling identification, victimization experiences, empowerment, and recovery and self protection. Therapeutic discussions
and art therapy projects are completed to address the issues.
- Middle school group for ages 11 to 13: The focus of this group is more on therapeutic discussion with a support quality. Each
group utilizes therapeutic discussions, art and writing projects. This group deals with self-esteem, victimization and self-protection.
- High school group ages 14 to 18: This group has a similar focus as the middle school group but the goals of the therapeutic
discussions center around self-protection, issues with date rape, and teen pregnancies. Discussion, writing and art projects
are utilized to address these issues.
- Caretakers group: This group is designed to focus on caretakers whose children have been sexually abuse usually by a third
party. The group educates caretakers on what the impact on the child is in relation to the sexual abuse, offender dynamics
and child protection. The group also gives parents the opportunity to discuss their feelings around the abuse.
- Parents of sibling sexual abuse: This group is focused on providing education and support to parents whose children have sexually
acted out with a sibling or other young children. The goals of the group are to provide information regarding child development,
sex offender dynamics, and supervision.
