Away from the structure of school, homework can be a challenge for both you and your child. The key is to provide an environment
that is free from distraction. Here are some tips to help make doing homework more successful:
- Be positive and constructive when you critique your child’s work.
- Turn off the television and, eliminate other distractions such as video games, the computer and the radio, so your child can
really concentrate on their homework.
- Do some of your own 'homework', like paying the bills, while your child is doing his or her homework.
- Develop a reward system for completing work.
- Divide homework by subject, instead of your child trying to tackle all their homework at one time, to spread things out.
- When your child is done with homework, check it over. This shows that you’re interested in having them do quality work.
- Don’t do the work for them. Give them help, but let them complete their assignment.
- Be sympathetic when your child is struggling with work. Don’t criticize them for not grasping something. Instead, say something
like "that’s tough" and offer help.
Perhaps most importantly, be proud when your child accomplishes something.
