The Sheriff’s Office views literacy as an essential component in an effective life and gives education a high priority at
the Detention Facility. Instruction is offered in English as a second language, adult basic education, and General Education
Development (GED) test preparation. GED testing is offered weekly free of charge. An average of 65 inmates receive their GEDs
each year.
Inmates may choose to work on their reading, writing, and math skills using a 10-station computer lab. Computer instruction
is also available to speakers of other languages who wish to improve their knowledge of English. In addition to computerized
learning, inmates also may receive individual tutoring from community volunteers who donate approximately three hours of their
time each week to assist inmates during education class. Approximately 400 inmates per year enroll in the education program.
