Detention Services
The Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility has come a long way since Arapahoe County opened its one-room jail house in
1865. Located at 7375 S. Potomac St., Centennial, the Detention Facility, which opened in 1987 and renamed by the Board of
County Commissioners in 2002 to honor former Sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan, is a 299,241-square-foot facility with the capacity
to house 1,166 inmates.
The Detentions Facility is recognized by the National Institute of Corrections and serves as a national model for its direct
supervision design. Direct supervision places detention officers in open day rooms with prisoners to provide more effective
supervision of inmates.
The jail also includes nationally recognized programs and features, such as A-STEP - an inmate work program; a computer training
center; televised visitation system - the first of its kind in Colorado; and the Juvenile Assessment Center, a collaborative
effort between law enforcement, District Attorney's Office, schools, mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation agencies
to help at-risk youth. Detention Services is commanded by Captain Vincent Sauter, a 22-year veteran of detentions operations
experience.
Another function of Detention Services is the protection of the courts and the enforcement of judicial orders. The Sheriff
provides support to Division A County Court in Littleton; Division B County Courts in Aurora and State District Court in Centennial.
