The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Public Safety Bureau, Investigation Services Section participated in the 9NEWS Fraud
Squad week from November 12, 2007 through November 17, 2007.
Investigator Tod Marner responded to 9NEWS Studios to participate in a call center that was set up to answer citizen questions
related to fraud and identity theft.
9NEWS conducted an interview with Investigator Tim Rotter that revealed that even trusted friends can steal your identity.
The week culminated with the 9NEWS/Crime Stoppers Shred-a-thon on Saturday November 17, 2007.
Citizens were invited to come to several drop-off locations including the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters building located at
13101 East Broncos Parkway in Centennial to drop off up to 5 boxes of documents to the Shred-it mobile trucks for shredding.
The event was free to the public, but donations for the Crime Stoppers program were accepted. Crime Stoppers collected $27,882.
All donations benefit Crime Stoppers and will be spent on rewards issued to solve crimes in the Denver Metro area. Denver
Metro Crime Stoppers is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that receives no public funding.
An overwhelming number of Coloradans turned out for the first 9NEWS/Crime Stoppers Shred-a-thon.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s drop-off location was manned by Captain Brice Moomaw and the Arapahoe County Explorers. There
were lines of cars backed out of almost every drop-off point by 6am according to 9NEWS.
9NEWS interviewed several citizens. "I brought old checks," one person said. "Income taxes, credit cards," said another.
Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey advised that he saw documents from the 80’s. "So people have held onto this stuff
for a long time and I think it's good to see them get it out of their houses, get it out of their offices, and get it shredded."
The event, which was scheduled to run from 6 a.m. until noon, garnered such an overwhelming response workers were shredding
documents until 9 p.m. Police and deputies were on hand to guard the boxes of documents that had not yet gone through the
shredder.
More than 125 tons of important documents were shredded into confetti by Shred-it trucks. The paper, made into bales and sent
off to a recycling facility in Wisconsin, could someday end up back in your house as a napkin or a paper towel.
9NEWS and Crime Stoppers plan to schedule additional Shred-a-thons, but the dates of those events have not yet been announced. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Public Safety Bureau, Investigation Services Section participated in the 9NEWS Fraud
