Theft from Motor Vehicles
During the month of April, many residents in the area of I-25 and East Dry Creek Road felt violated and insecure after experiencing numerous crimes of opportunity. Approximately eleven victims awoke to find their vehicles broken into and personal property missing from within.
During the early morning hours of April 8, 2009, an Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Deputy was on an increased patrol in the area due to the previous criminal reports, and observed a suspicious vehicle leaving the apartment complex. The Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and was able to identify all of the occupants. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody on traffic related offenses and a vehicle inventory was completed. During the inventory, Deputies discovered several electronic items inside. Later in the day several citizens living in the area began reporting their vehicles were broken into and several items were stolen.
The cases were assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Services for follow up. During the investigation, two reporting victims were able to positively identify property that was recovered from the earlier traffic stop. As a result of follow up interviews and further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office was able to file charges of burglary and theft for two of the reported cases. These cases are currently at the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office pending prosecution.
As a result of these recent events, concerned residents attended a community meeting with the apartment complex management and representatives from the Sheriff’s Office Patrol, Investigations and Crime Prevention units. During the meeting, current trends and prevention topics were discussed. After the meeting the Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit also conducted a site survey of the apartment complex to provide any possible recommendations in protecting the citizens.
