The Special Investigations Section (SIS) is a multi-faceted section with numerous law enforcement responsibilities. Areas
of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the investigation of gang activity, fugitive apprehension, narcotic investigations,
sex offender registration, retail liquor establishments, prostitution, criminal intelligence and Federal criminal investigations.
During the course of their assignments, investigators often utilize specialized equipment such as: covert tracking devices,
cameras, sensors and computers. One such piece of equipment enables investigators to monitor remote areas without compromising
their whereabouts.
In addition to criminal investigations, SIS is often tasked with executive protection details involving the United States
Secret Service, State Department Diplomatic Security Services, Federal Bureau of Investigations and state law enforcement
agencies located throughout the country. Previous assignments have included current and past Presidents, Vice-Presidents,
First Ladies, Senators, Governors and Foreign Dignitaries.
Originally staffed by two investigators, the Intelligence Unit was described as a “mini-division with assorted functions and
duties.” Primary investigations focused on narcotics/drug investigations and liquor enforcement. Other past areas of responsibility
included education and training of patrol, pharmacist correspondence, vice enforcement, bookmaking, carnival operations and
intelligence gathering.
Currently SIS is staffed with 7 commissioned personnel and 3 civilians. Job responsibilities remain similar to our predecessors
of several decades ago. Recent notable assignments have included executive protection for the largest gathering of Nobel Peace
Prize Laureates in North America, the 2008 Democratic Convention and ongoing complex criminal investigations.
