Contacting suspicious vehicle leads to Sheriff’s Office participation with 9Cares Colorado Shares Holiday Drive In November 2007, approximately 70 employees and family members of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office volunteered for the
9 Cares Colorado Shares Holiday Drive. Deputy Tim Klisnick, who organized the event, advised this was the Sheriff’s Office
third year participating in what has become the regions largest one day food, clothing and toy drive. The Sheriff’s Office first became involved with 9 Cares, after Deputy Klisnick contacted a suspicious vehicle while patrolling
his local businesses. The driver of the vehicle, a 9 News anchor, happened to be shopping for a new home in the area. Deputy
Klisnick’s contact, lead to the Sheriff’s Office opportunity securing a spot in the food drive for 2005. This year’s event held at the Inverness Hotel was a huge success collecting over 50,000 pounds of food. Due to Deputy Klisnick’s
efforts, as well as the countless volunteers, 9 News has invited the Sheriff’s Office back for a fourth year in 2008. Sheriff
Robinson expressed hope this will become a tradition with the Sheriff’s Office for years to come.
Forfeiture funds used to save lives through driver education. Alive at 25, is a decisional driver’s education course, sponsored by the National Safety Council. Why do we need Alive at 25? Alive at 25 is important to Arapahoe County and the City of Centennial because traffic crashes are the leading cause of teen
fatalities, accounting for 44 percent of teen deaths in the United States. In November 2007, Deputies tragically witnessed
this first hand while assisting Colorado State Patrol in eastern Arapahoe County. The unlicensed driver of a single car motor
vehicle accident, a 15 year old female, lost control of her car which rolled over, resulting in a fatality. Three additional
teenage occupants survived the accident. Young driver safety education has and continues to be a goal for the Arapahoe County
Sheriff's Office. In 2007, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson committed to using forfeiture funds to pay tuition so
that all of Arapahoe County's high school juniors can attend an "Alive at 25" course. To learn more about this program contact the Community Resource Section at 720-874-3746.
Cell phone picture leads to capture of Bengal tiger in Centennial In December 2007, members of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Colorado Division of Wildlife capturing a Bengal
tiger living in Centennial. The DOW was sent cell phone pictures of a Bengal tiger being driven around in an SUV in Centennial in late November. A few weeks later the DOW received two additional independent reports that a tiger was being held in a backyard
in Centennial. Surveillance was established by sheriff’s investigators. A DOW investigation showed the tiger’s owner did
not posses a license to own the tiger as required by law in Colorado. The tiger was safely removed from the residence and placed in a licensed facility pending the outcome of a court case.
