ACSO Deputies recognized during 2008 Traffic Safety Heroes Event
On September 16, 2008, the Colorado State Patrol recognized law enforcement officers from across the state during their 2008
Traffic Safety Heroes Event. Law enforcement officers were recognized for significant contributions to traffic safety through
DUI enforcement and Seat Belt Safety campaigns.
Deputy James Cook was awarded the Colorado Traffic Heros' award after making 47 DUI arrests during the year 2007. Deputy Cook
is a five year veteran with the Sheriff's Office, currently assigned to the Public Safety Bureau, Patrol Services.
Deputy Eric Lawson also received the Colorado Traffic Hero’s award for his efforts during the 2008 Click it or Ticket campaigns.
Deputy Lawson issued 514 citations to motorists who were not wearing their seatbelt. Deputy Lawson is a 10  year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office and currently assigned to the Public Safety Bureau, Traffic Team.
Halloween DUI Task Force
On Halloween, October 31, 2008, eight metro area law enforcement agencies worked together as part of their ongoing commitment
to make our streets safer by targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Approximately 40 members from the
Metro Denver DUI Task Force concentrated their efforts in Denver, Arapahoe and Douglas Counties between the hours of 8 p.m.
and 4 a.m.
Working together through an established multi-agency agreement, police officers, deputy sheriffs and Colorado State Troopers
patrolled the South Parker Road corridor from Denver south into Unincorporated Douglas County as a cohesive unit, looking
for intoxicated motorists. Uniformed officers from Arapahoe County, Aurora, the Colorado State Patrol, Denver, Douglas County,
Jefferson County, Parker and Wheat Ridge, were highly visible as they worked together to reduce drunk driving and promote
public safety. Deputy District Attorneys from the 1st, 2nd, 17th and 18th judicial districts will prosecute cases initiated
by the task force, ensuring a comprehensive team approach.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 41 percent of all highway fatalities across the nation on
Halloween night involved a driver or motorcycle operator with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.
ACSO deputies made 111 traffic stops, resulting in 5 DUI arrests.
