Juveniles found in possession of handgun at school On Feb. 1, 2008, at approximately 9:43 a.m., School Resource Officer Amanda Cruz was advised a juvenile at Eaglecrest High
School may be in possession of a handgun. Deputy Cruz located the juvenile in a classroom and found an unloaded .38 caliber
Smith and Wesson handgun inside the juvenile’s back pack. The juvenile in possession of the handgun was identified as a 16-year
old male. Further investigation determined the 16-year old male had previously sold the handgun to another juvenile male who
returned it after deciding he no longer wanted the gun. The juvenile who originally purchased the gun, and then brought it
back to school, was also identified as a 16-year old male.
Both subjects were taken into custody and booked at the Juvenile Assessment Center. The subjects will be charged with, Unlawfully

Three family members killed in fatal accident On Feb. 16 2008 at approximately 6 a.m., Deputies responded to an injury accident on Interstate 70 at mile marker 331. The
Colorado State Patrol, as well as Byers, Strasburg and Deer Trail Fire Departments also responded. Upon arrival by deputies,
they discovered that the accident involved a truck in tow, a passenger van, and a semi. It was determined from witnesses and
road evidence that the passenger van, occupied by a family of 6 had struck the back of a slow moving truck that was in tow,
as both vehicles were heading westbound on I-70. This collision caused the unbelted rear passenger of the van to be ejected.
The van then crossed the median where it collided with an eastbound semi causing the semi to also cross the median onto westbound
I-70 where it came to rest in a field. The passenger van was forced back into the median by the force of the collision with
the semi.
Both the driver pulling the towed vehicle and the semi were uninjured. A passenger in the semi sustained minor injuries and
was transported by ground ambulance. Three of the van occupants were deceased at the time of arrival by deputies. The three
remaining occupants were transported by 3 helicopter ambulance services to local hospitals.
