Applicants seeking employment with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office should be aware of certain requirements that are inherent with any law enforcement profession. Honesty, maturity, self-discipline, initiative and an exceptional ability to deal with people and traumatic events are expected of all applicants. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is an alcohol, drug, and smoke free work environment.


Applicant Disqualification Factors
· Current and recent use of non-prescribed or illegal drugs. Applicants who have recent illegal drug usage will be disqualified. Recent drug use includes marijuana within 1 year and all other illegal drug use within the past 5 years. All other illegal drug use will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 
· Any felony conviction
· Police history - type, frequency and nature of contacts
· Driving Record 
· Outside activities which may be deemed a conflict of interest
· Revelation of assaultive behavior
· Documented record of prior work performance
· Unsuccessful completion of any basic requirement
· Inability to perform the essential functions of the position

Deputy Sheriff / Deputy Recruit Positions
· Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and must be able to effectively communicate in written and spoken English.
· Minimum Age for Applicants is 21 years. 
· High School Diploma or GED* 
· P.O.S.T. Certified or certifiable** 

Additional Specific Disqualification Factors for Deputy Sheriffs / Deputy Recruits
· Misdemeanor convictions that affect an individual’s ability to become P.O.S.T. Certified
· Domestic violence conviction
· Permanent restraining order as a result of domestic violence

Civilian Positions
· Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and must be able to effectively communicate in written and spoken English. 
· Minimum Age for Applicants is 18 years. 
· High School Diploma or GED* 
  *Certain positions may have additional or specific education requirements
**Colorado Police Officer Standards and Training Certificate

Examinations Required
The selection process for any position within the Sheriff’s Office may include written test(s), an oral interview, skills test(s) and/or other selection methods designed to measure applicants' ability to perform the essential functions of the job they are seeking. Required examinations also include, upon a conditional job offer:
· Polygraph Examination
· Background Investigation
· Psychological Evaluation (for certain positions).
· Medical Examination, including a drug screen
