What is the Property Tax Exemption for Seniors? |
| A. |
The Senior Citizen and Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemptions currently existing in Colorado statute allows for those who
qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 in actual value of their primary residence to be exempted. Under the authority provided
to the General Assembly by the Colorado Constitution, the exemption amount can be changed or eliminated. In June 2009, Senate
Bill 09-276 was adopted. The bill eliminates only the senior exemption benefit and only for tax year 2009. Tax statements mailed in 2010 for qualifying seniors will not reflect the exemption and
will be for the full tax amount. The disabled veteran exemption remains in place.
In spite of the one year suspension, the Assessor will continue to process new applications for the exemption program and
those who qualify for the first time in 2009 are encouraged to apply.

What is early voting? |
| A. |
As part of election reform legislation in Colorado, early voting has been available for over 10 years. Prior to the election,
registered voters in Colorado can opt to cast their votes early. It has already proven to be a success in Arapahoe County
and is getting more popular with each election.
|
| Q. |
Why should I early vote? |
| A. |
The intent is to meet the needs of busy people who want more options than just voting on a single day at a single precinct.
We want to remove any physical or psychological barriers that might prevent someone from voting. If you know, for example,
that you have a full day's worth of activities on Election Day, you can make it easier on yourself by taking advantage of
the early voting option. Between early voting, absentee ballots and traditional polling on Election Day, there are a number
of voting options so that no one should be prevented from voting.
|
| Q. |
Who can register to vote? |
| A. |
You must be 18 years or older (you may pre-register if you are 17 yrs. and 9 mos.); you must be a United States citizen; you
must be a permanent resident of Colorado 30 days prior to an election.
|
